How to Never Run Out of Ideas for Awesome Blog Content

One of my all time favorites quotes is by Maya Angelou who said, "You can't use up creativity. The more you use, the more you have." And I find that to be so true!

Many times one creative idea will lead to another.

But what about those times when your brain feels constipated? Like ... your brain NEEDS to take a dump but it can't?

(Sorry, that last sentence was uncalled for.)

Some times it's easy to feel stuck when you think that it's all been done before and worry that you'll run out of topics and ideas to discuss.

But fear not, friends! I believe your creative wheels can churn indefinitely. So here's 7 laxatives to relieve your brain's constipation.

Errrr- TIPS!!! I mean tips. 

Here's 7 tips to keep coming up with awesome content:

1. Keep a list of ideas.

Whether it's in a notebook, on your phone or on some other list-making device, keep a running list of all your content ideas WITH YOU wherever you go so that you can write them down as soon as the inspiration strikes!

I like to use Trello for organizing and storing all of my fabulous ideas!  

Trello is also available for your phone and my phone is pretty much always with me, so if a random idea strikes while I'm out I will immediately jot it down.

Plus ... I'm addicted to making lists. Making lists and crossing off items is SO MUCH FUN!!!!! 

2. Listen.

Do you get asked questions by people in person, on social media or via e-mail?

Because those questions can be content idea GOLD.

Those questions are literally showing you a specific problem or frustration that people need solved. So BE super awesome and solve it with some great content!

3. Read.

I love to get new ideas by reading books, magazines and blogs!

When I'm feeling particularly stuck, I'll go to Barnes'N'Noble and just sit and read for hours.

If you find an idea from some one else that inspires you, make sure to put your own unique spin on it. (Because simply copying some one else's work is just not cool, not to mention boring!)

4. Move.

Yep, I already said it in this post on how to be more productive, and I'm gonna say it again here: get out there and move your buttocks!!!

(Did I really just say "buttocks?" Also, does anyone else find the word "buttocks" to be kind of hilarious? Hehehe. Why NO I'm not 10 years old, why do you ask?)

Anyway. I'm not the only one who finds that exercising helps to boost productivity and creativity, studies actually prove it!

(Aren't my colorful running shoes the best?!)

5. Brainstorm.

Start a timer and commit to a 30 minute brainstorming session.

Let the ideas floooow baby, don't hold back! Just write down anything and everything that comes to mind with no censoring- you can do that later.

If your brain is so constipated that you can't think of anything off the bat, start by answering questions. Ask yourself questions like ...

  • What are the interests of your ideal audience?
  • What are some common misconceptions about your industry?
  • What do YOU have that your ideal audience is looking for?

And guess what?

Before you know it, you'll have so many ideas you won't know what to do with them all!

6. Ask.

Every month when I'm planning my blog's editorial calendar for the following month, I'll actually ASK people for any specific posts or topics that they'd like to read about.

This is one of the BEST ways to come up with great content!

Why? Because you know for a fact that it's what people want because they straight up told you!

Just make sure that the suggestions you get from people are from your actual ideal audience and are in line with your brand/purpose before using the suggestions.

It sounds so simple, and yet you just need to ASK.

7. Revisit an old post/topic.

There is NO shame in revisiting a blog post or topic that you've already covered!

Opinions on a topic can change over time, new knowledge about said post can grow, etc.

Think about it this way; magazines and movies are constantly using the same topics over and over again all the time! So ... why can't you?

Just say'in.
