I'll bet if you asked a bunch of people what they want in life that many of them would respond with "to be happy." I mean ... right?!?

Unfortunately a lot of people seem to put happiness off because they believe that certain things need to be in place before they can truly be happy.

(I know I was guilty of this many years ago!)

But here's the thing.

Happiness is a choice, and it's about making the choice to be happy even when our circumstances aren't perfect! Because life is kind of messy, and things are probably never going to be "perfect."

Plus we DESERVE happiness RIGHT NOW, dag nabbit!

So here's 15 ways that you can get to that happy place right this very minute ...

1. Laugh.

You know that I LOVE laughing.

Laughing is the best. It's pretty much the best feeling in the world. Laughter releases feel good hormones, works the abs and boosts your mood. What's not to love? 

2. Be Yourself.

This is key to being happy! Pretending to be some one that you're not is exhausting, plus there is only ONE you.

Wouldn't you rather be the best version of yourself than a copy cat of some one else?

3. Appreciate what you already have.

It's so easy to take what we already have for granted and so difficult to satiate the near constant want for something more, something better.

But take a moment to appreciate what you already have; your belongings. Your friends. Your family. When you focus on appreciating what you already have, the focus will turn away from what you DON'T have.

4. Take care of YOU.

If you're eating crap, sleeping like crap and treating your body like crap well ... then ... this may come as a shock but ... you will probably FEEL like crap!

(Yes, that's a lot of crap!) You've only got one body, so make sure to treat it right. Get enough sleep, eat nourishing foods and get out there and move a little!

5. Be in the moment.

These days people are so focused on keeping busy and distracting themselves with social media and other online sites/phone apps/texting that it's hard to remember what it's like to just BE in the moment.

Next time you're with your friends, turn off your phone.

Or enjoy a sunset with NO distractions. Or call a friend to have a real conversation instead of texting them. I mean ... you remember the days before smart phones right?! I think we need to get back to that ... just a little.

6. Notice the little things.

You know what I love doing?

Noticing the little every day things and taking a moment to enjoy them.

Like taking a moment every morning to sniff and enjoy the aroma of my freshly opened coffee beans (it's a nose-gasm, let me tell you!)

Or noticing and enjoying the sound of the breeze blowing outside my window. Little moments that we take for granted happen every single day so, as they say, "stop and smell the roses."

 7. Keep learning.

There is so much to learn that you could spend every day all day learning and you STILL wouldn't learn everything!

Try to learn about something you're interested in or passionate about every  single day. It's a great way to keep the mind active plus learning is the gateway for new inspiration!

8. Let go of the past.

There is absolutely NO point in dwelling on past mistakes, past failures, past traumas, etc etc. While it's great to learn from these things, dwelling on them and letting them shape who you are NOW negatively is just no good. You can't change the past, so let it go.

9. Surround yourself with awesome people.

I am a firm believer in QUALITY over quantity when it comes to friends. Surround yourself with friends who love you for YOU and with whom you can be yourself with. Cut out the people who cause unnecessary stress, negativity, anxiety ... just ... let them go.

10. Let go of grudges.

Nothing is more toxic to YOU than holding onto grudges and resentment.

Learn to forgive and let go. It's like a beautiful weight being lifted from your shoulders when you do! Because really ... who wants to go through life lugging around an unnecessary stack of weights? It makes my body sore and tired just thinking about it!

11. Do something you love every single day.

No matter how busy you are, take time to do something you love EVERY single day.

Even if it's only for 5 minutes!

Maybe for you that means enjoying a cup of coffee by yourself every morning. Or perhaps it's going on a 30 minute walk every day. Or spending 15 minutes every evening reading your favorite book or singing along to your favorite tunes!

12. Change what you can, let go of what you can't.

I know I know, that sounded super cliche. But who cares!!!

Because it's true.

There's absolutely no point in dwelling on things that you don't have the power to change while letting them make you unhappy. Let'em go.

On the other hand, take control of the things you CAN change. Take stock of what's currently making you unhappy in your life right now and make any necessary changes!

 13. Spread the happiness.

Nothing works better to put a smile on your face than making some one else happy!

Smile at a stranger, call a friend, do a random act of kindness. There's a million ways to spread the happiness, so do it.

14. Be your own best friend!

Being your own best friend is the best!

Learn to enjoy being by yourself. Get to know yourself. Learn to entertain yourself.

After all, no one can love you like you can. (No, that was not meant to sound perverted! Ehem.)

15. Stay positive.

Yes ... I'm naturally a pretty positive person.

But I believe trying to stay positive, especially during the super rough not-so-pretty times, is really important! Things WILL get better. They always do.
