Fear: "An unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that some one or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat."
Unfortunately, this unpleasant emotion holds a lot of people back and keeps them from truly going after their dreams!
(Not cool fear, NOT cool. Yeah fear, I'm talking to YOU!)
A lot of people put their dreams on hold or choose not to pursue them at all because they fear something. Failure. Rejection. Being broke. Being laughed at. Being unsuccessful. You get the idea! In fact you've probably experienced fear in many ways already! Fear is NORMAL. Everyone should be experiencing it every now and then.
The problem comes, however, when you let fear hold you back.
If you're currently trying to decide whether or not to pursue a particular dream of yours, first ask yourself THIS question:
10 years from now, will you regret NOT doing this? Really think about it for a second. Picture your life 10 years in the future and think about how you'll feel looking back. If you answer "yes", then do the thing you're dreaming about and do it NOW. Because you know what? Life is short and it will just keep getting shorter!
Are you feeling fearful just thinking about it? Good, that's normal. So here are 5 ways to knock that fear on it's butt! Hard.
1. What's the worst that can happen?
Fear really stems from the unknown. Our overactive imaginations can come up with ALL sorts of terrible, horrific things to hold us back!
Take a moment to visualize your obstacles and worst case scenario. Then take a moment to figure out WHAT you will do should the worst case scenario happen, and HOW you will overcome any possible obstacles.
2. Write it down.
Everything I just talked about above? Write it down.
First, write down the worst case scenario. Then, write down what you will do should the worst case scenario happen. There now, doesn't that feel better already?
Knowing what you will do should the shit completely hit the fan is a great way to help put your mind at ease! Next, make a list of any obstacles you might face (because there WILL be obstacles!) But don't panic. Because next to your list of obstacles, you are now going to write down how you will deal with/overcome each one.
3. Feel the fear.
Like I said, feeling fear is NORMAL.
If you're feeling ZERO fear than you're probably not dreaming big enough, taking large enough risks or pushing yourself past your comfort zone. Let yourself feel that feeling of discomfort but DON'T let it hold you back! It's just a feeling.
4. You might never feel "ready."
If you are waiting until you feel ready or have all the answers, then that day will probably never come. Do what you can to prepare and then GO FOR IT.
Just bite the bullet. (Where the heck did that saying come from anyway?))
5. Develop a dream chasing mindset.
Oh yes, this one is super important!
You need to learn how to show up and be ruthless, no matter what.
Was I scared to move out to Hollywood after graduating college to pursue acting? Absolutely. I bawled my eyes out as soon as I got into my car and started heading west!
Was I pee-your-pants fearful of driving on the Los Angeles freeways for the first time?
Hell yeah I was! I started bawling like mad the first time I took the on ramp to get on the 405. (I bawl a lot.) But am I SO glad that I went for it? You bet.
Did I fear failure when I started my own photography business? Damn straight!!!! What about my online business? HELL yes I did! But I did those things anyway, and I couldn't be happier.
So the moral of this blog post?
TELL FEAR TO GET THE HELL OUT OF YOUR WAY!!! :P
